An important cause of splenomegaly is portal hypertension.
Other causes of splenomegaly can be categorised as
1. Haematological
2. Infective
3. Infiltrative
4. Neoplastic
Haematological causes include haematological malignancies such as leukemias, lymphomas and myeloproliferative disorders, certain types of anaemias such as sickle cell anaemia and haemolytic anaemia
Infective causes include EBV, CMV, HIV infections, malaria
Infiltrative causes include rheumatoid arthritis, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis
Many carcinomas also cause splenomegaly.
Massive splenomegaly is when the spleen is enlarged beyond the umbilicus. It can be caused by Malaria, CML, Myeloproliferative disorders, leishManiasis, and Gaucher's syndrome
